One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure

In our consumption hungry society there is an unbelievable amount of waste that goes to the dumps every day, with the fashion industry leading the way as one of the most wasteful of all industries in the world. Mulch’s goal is to be zero waste and as resourceful as possible. We found a fashion brand that had made a large batch of T-shirts they could not use. The tees had a poor dye and the color was blotchy. We acquired the whole batch of basic cotton tees with a mission to give them a new look and a new life.

We hand dyed all the T-shirts in small batches. Each batch was 20 or less. Each batch takes about 3 hours to dye. The advantage is that each small hand dye batch comes out unique with its own shade of colors, there are not two that are the same. The dyes we use are not your standard colors; the colors we use are natural and earthy. We used a variation of dye techniques; we did full emersion dye baths, suffocation, low emersion, tie-dye, ice dye, batik, and stamps. We added constructional stitches to enhance the longevity of the T-shirts. Our graphic designer Jorge Martinez created custom hand drawn artworks for each batch of tees.

Mulch brings a new mentality to the industry. We put the planet and people in the forefront of our brand. This project intrigued us because we were able to take T-shirts at the end of their life cycle and give them a new life. The T-shirts follow the same mentality of our brand expressing uniqueness in each Tee.
