Mulch X Green Fuz: A Collection to Dye for

At Mulch California, we are dyeing to see the results of our latest brand collaboration with Green Fuz, a San Clemente company making specialty surfboard bags. Handcrafted from organic canvas and denim, these bags are a call to old-school style. With rock ‘n’ roll skater vibes, Green Fuz deviates from your typical surf brand, and the results are purely artistic.

Like Mulch California, Green Fuz makes everything locally in order to share quality, well-made products with a growing community. As a like-minded company (and fans of these cool board bags), Mulch was thrilled when Green Fuz asked us to dye the fabrics for their upcoming collection. We consider this craft to be a Mulch California specialty, as our team has done extensive research on dyeing techniques, different types of dyes, and dyeing various fabrics. We were up for this board bag challenge.

Aside from one specific source of inspiration (Dinosaur Jr., an old school punk rock band), Green Fuz gave us full creative license on fabric design. Mehr Alejandro referred to colors from the Fall 2016 runways, selecting green, soft pink, and brown shades to construct a palette that would mesh with the Green Fuz aesthetic. We wanted this project to showcase the beauty of natural dyes when precisely executed under full emersion, low emersion, and ice dyeing techniques. Every sheet of fabric has a unique result, nuanced by the element of the human hand and professional improvisation.

We had a great experience working with Green Fuz, and we can’t wait to see the final product when it launches! Read more about this limited edition collab in our interview with Green Fuz below.

When and why did you start Green Fuz? We started Green Fuz almost four years ago. We were talking about how we didn’t like most bag designs and decided to make some of our own. We posted them on Instagram, and the next day, a local shop asked us to make some for them. The rest is history!

What differentiates Green Fuz from other surfboard bag companies? I’d say the designs are unique; they have more of a rock ‘n’ roll or skate feel, opposed to a traditional surf style. We use organic canvas and denim materials, which are more old school. Most bag companies use synthetic materials, which cost less but are not as good, in our opinion. We also make the bags locally. They are made in San Clemente, or occasionally a few towns over when our workload gets to be too much.

Why did you choose Mulch California to help design your new bags? We saw their stuff on Icons of Surf and liked the dye jobs a lot. We thought it would be cool to mix it up and collaborate with someone in town. We just got the fabrics back, and they look insane! Can’t wait to see the final product!

What was your inspiration for the new bags? We’re always pulling inspiration from music. We grew up in the ‘90s, so a lot comes from there, as well as ‘60s, ‘70s rock, Indie . . . We went and saw Dinosaur Jr. again recently and asked Mulch to make a bag that looked like a Dinosaur Jr. album cover! We’re pretty excited about that one!

When will the bags be available? Where can people get them? The bags should be available by late November. We will have them on our website, in Icons of Surf, and in a few other shops. There’s a list of shops on our website www.green-fuz.com.
